"Waiting On" Wednesday - Monument 14: Savage Drift

"Waiting On"  Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on...

Monument 14: Savage Drift by Emmy Laybourne

* Book will be released May 6, 2014

Check out the description from Barnes & Noble:

"It's over.
Dean, Alex, and the other survivors of the Monument 14 have escaped the disaster zone and made it to the safety of a Canadian refugee camp. Some of the kids have been reunited with their families, and everyone is making tentative plans for the future. And then, Niko learns that his lost love, Josie, has survived!
Or is it?
For Josie, separated from the group and presumed dead, life has gone from bad to worse. Trapped in a terrible prison camp with other exposed O’s and traumatized by her experiences, she has given up all hope of rescue. Meanwhile, scared by the government’s unusual interest in her pregnancy, Astrid—along with her two protectors, Dean and Jake—joins Niko on his desperate quest to be reunited with Josie.
In Monument 14: Savage Drift, the stunningly fierce conclusion to the Monument 14 trilogy, author Emmy Laybourne ups the stakes even higher for a group of kids who have continually survived the unthinkable. Can they do so one last time?"

I love this series because you never know what’s going to happen next. All the characters are compelling and you have to wonder if their lives can ever go back to some kind of normal. I have no idea how the series will end but I know I can’t wait to find out.

P.R.R. (Pre Review Ravings) - Alien Collective

These are my P.R.R.(Pre Review Ravings) aka what I think before I write my review.

Alien Collective by Gini Koch

* Love the cover for this one, especially after reading the scene where it takes place.

* Sandy, now that is one heck of an interesting development, I can't wait to see if this character comes back.

* Jamie and Mous Mous are quite the pair it seems.

* Would have liked to see more of the election process.

* There's a real ominous feeling throughout wondering who the Mastermind could be.

* Kitty's talent for recruiting people to their side continues to be awesome.

* Squeaky = a great character

*Android!!!!

* Definitely going to be some crazy times in their future.

Tiny Reverse Vampire Reviews, Watcher of the Dark

Watcher of the Dark by Joseph Nassise

* Provided by the publisher for review
* Spoilers are highlighted like so :)

4 bats and a tiara wearing bat out of 5

First there was the problem of finding out what happened to his daughter in Eyes to See. Then there were the witches needing help in King of the Dead.  Although those were both good Watcher of the Dark is the best so far.

The story starts out a little slow but once found at the hotel a whole new crazy adventure starts.  A mafia like mage blackmailing him in to help because he threatens his friends and a search to find the key to one of the gates to hell that everyone wants to find for their own reasons.
I dont want to give away too much so I’ll just point out a few of my favorite parts.

New character:
I love Ilyana. She is a character that leaves you wanting to know more. In this book you get to see a good variety of her abilities and personality but thinking about it there has to be a lot more to come.

Favorite Scene:
Hunt wakes up at a murder scene, it is obvious that he just finished committing under the influence of his new “friend” that is hitchhiking in his head.  Almost all of the scenes with the ghost in his head are great. I love this scene the most though because it is neat to see how all the work with the police from the first books comes back into play. It is great to see all the little tricks and steps he goes through to try to make sure all the evidence is destroyed or hidden.

Although my favorite character didn’t get to come into play very much in this book I can’t wait until the next. Hunt has hooked me, Dimitri my fave is going to be more active in the next one and Denise is back too. For a good read that is even better than the first two were and has enough twists and turns to keep you interested I would recommend picking this one up.

Saturday Serenade - Dorothy Must Die

Tune sung to the chorus of Another One Bites the Dust by Queen:

Dorothy must bite the dust
Dorothy must bite the dust
Dorothy must bite the dust
Dorothy must bite the dust
There are plenty of ways you can hurt a witch
And make her pay the price.
You can kick her
You can trick her
She will treat you bad and leave you
On the ground
But Amy's ready, yes she's ready for her
Tin woodman, lion, scarecrow too
Not the Oz you remember that's true
Now Dorothy is the one to beat.

"Waiting On" Wednesday - Take Me On

"Waiting On"  Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on...

Take Me On by Katie McGarry

* Book will be released May 27, 2014

Check out the description from Barnes & Noble:

"Acclaimed author Katie McGarry returns with the knockout new story of two high school seniors who are about to learn what winning really means
Champion kickboxer Haley swore she'd never set foot in the ring again after one tragic night. But then the guy she can't stop thinking about accepts a mixed martial arts fight in her honor. Suddenly, Haley has to train West Young. All attitude, West is everything Haley promised herself she'd stay away from. Yet he won't last five seconds in the ring without her help.
West is keeping a big secret from Haley. About who he really is. But helping her—fighting for her—is a shot at redemption. Especially since it's his fault his family is falling apart. He can't change the past, but maybe he can change Haley's future."

This series is addictive kind of like bad soap operas. I love all the drama and angst. These characters are never boring and you never know what’s going to happen next.

Super Series

What series or authors are on your auto buy list?

I have adored every book/series that I've read by this author. She is just superb at world building and making you care about every character.

This book showed me that Rowell is pretty much the master at having a dual perspective, parts of the book are just like perfect poetry.

This series is chock full of awesomeness and it’s the series that makes me actually laugh out loud the most in public while reading. Funny, cool, and once again I find myself caring about every single character.

This series/author writes such awesome angst and it’s kind of like a bad soap opera that you can’t look/don’t want to look away from. This is one addictive series that I can’t wait to read.

Greek mythology and some compelling characters = a story I can’t wait to read.

This series mixes cool supernatural elements with a family full of characters that you can’t wait to read more about.

Happy National Library Week

I work in an academic library so I get to see all different types of students and the general public sometimes. That means I get to help a whole bunch of people with a plethora of different questions/problems. It’s always interesting because you really do never know what people will ask. The job is rewarding and fun I don’t think I would ever want to work anywhere besides a library.

Happy National Library Week to all and here’s hoping you’ll visit your library and enjoy. :)

"Waiting On" Wednesday - Buzz Kill

"Waiting On"  Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on...

Buzz Kill by Beth Fantaskey

* Book will be released May 6, 2014

Check out the description from Barnes & Noble:

"Putting the dead in deadlineTo Bee or not to Bee? When the widely disliked Honeywell Stingers football coach is found murdered, 17-year-old Millie is determined to investigate. She is chasing a lead for the school newspaper – and looking to clear her father, the assistant coach, and prime suspect.
Millie's partner is gorgeous, smart—and keeping secretsMillie joins forces with her mysterious classmate Chase who seems to want to help her even while covering up secrets of his own.
She’s starting to get a reputation…without any of the benefits.Drama—and bodies—pile up around Millie and she chases clues, snuggles Baxter the so-ugly-he’s-adorable bassett hound, and storms out of the world’s most awkward school dance/memorial mash-up. At least she gets to eat a lot of pie.
Best-selling author Beth Fantaskey’s funny, fast-paced blend of Clueless and Nancy Drew is a suspenseful page-turner that is the best time a reader can have with buried weapons, chicken clocks, and a boy who only watches gloomy movies…but somehow makes Millie smile. Bee-lieve it."

This looks like it’ll be an interesting/funny mystery. I like mysteries that aren’t all serious and CSI like so this looks like it could be a great book for me.

Mini Review - Half Bad

Half Bad by Sally Green

* Spoilers are highlighted like so :)
* Read via NetGalley for Review.

3 gnomes and a gnome hat out of 5 gnomes

I liked this book but wow is it weird to read at first. It starts with a different point of view that takes some getting used to. Plus you don’t learn the main character’s name for quite a while.

Once you get into the groove of the weird tense changes and how the story is set up then you’ll be asking tons of questions both good and bad. Questions like, who is that and what the heck is going on?

The whole concept of White witches and Black witches is intriguing. The main character Nathan being essentially half good/half evil is what the whole book hinges on. His story and the story of his messed up family is kind of like a train wreck you just can’t look away from it.

I liked the ending but it was a bit odd the choice he made since he’s essentially obsessed with this girl the whole book but doesn’t go and get her from the evil-ish lady right away. If you like new takes on witches you should definitely check out this book.

Top 5 Sundays - Books That Made You LOL!

The book has a lot of morbid humor which fits in nicely with my own sense of humor.  This is the kind of book that you'll find yourself actually laughing out loud a lot.

Oberon the dog in this series is hilarious and will make you laugh often.

This book is awesome and I love its funny take on the zombie genre.

This book along with Koch’s Alien series is full of funny moments, the humor and great characters is why I love this author’s writing so much.

This book/blog that Brosh writes is hilarious and insightful. This book will make you laugh out loud throughout the book.

Magic, murder, mayhem = this book has it all

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

* Book read via the publisher for review.

4 gnomes and a gnome hat out of 5 gnomes

This book is one heck of a great fractured fairy tale. I can see the tagline for the hopefully future movie now, “Not your Mama’s Wizard of Oz.” I loved this book but I highly recommend reading the prequel first so you can ease yourself into this crazy world.

I like the Wizard of Oz movie but I loved the books by L. Frank Baum about Ozma and all the other characters in Oz (I don’t think I’ve read all of them but it has been a while.) If you too read the old Oz books about Oz like then you’ll definitely figure out one of the twists. This author is a master at mixing characters from the Oz books and movie and twisting everything into something new.

In this Oz don’t be surprised by the f-bombs getting dropped and other assorted curse words, it’s a much darker place but it’s also intriguing to see how much everything has changed. Also, beware if you are prone to getting very attached to all the characters in the story.

Amy’s story starts off showing how her life isn’t exactly easy and how she gets to Oz is fitting to the original story. She’s a strong character who needs to get even stronger if she’s going to survive in this warped version of Oz. Amy is quick at making friends and enemies and you can’t help but hope for the best for her.

Through the story you’ll have no doubt that Dorothy does indeed need to die. Dorothy is one evil witchy woman. She’s not the only witch out there though which makes things extremely interesting.

Be prepared to look at Good and Wicked in a new way in this book that’s kind of like what I imagine would happen if The Wizard of Oz and Kill Bill had a baby. I’m looking forward to whatever happens next.

Sentence Sneak Peek - Dorothy Must Die

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

The first sentence from each chapter of Dorothy Must Die, it's a mini summary of what you can expect to read.

* Book read via the publisher for review.
* Spoilers are highlighted like so :)

“I first discovered I was trash three days before my ninth birth-day—one year after my father lost his job and moved to Secaucus to live with a woman named Crystal and four years before my mother had the car accident, started taking pills, and began exclusively wearing bedroom slippers instead of normal shoes.”

“I had to admit it looked a little scary outside: the darkening sky stretched over the empty, flat plain—a muddy, pinkish brown I’d never seen before—and the air seemed eerily still.”

“When I came to, the first thing I saw was the spongy gray floor of the trailer above me.”

Star and I walked, following the road, and when she seemed to get tired, I took her and placed her on my shoulder, where she perched patiently and looked out into the distance.”

“Dorothy happened.”

“Now, can you tell me what was going on back there?”

“We need to move,” Indigo said.”

“I knew we were really in trouble when I saw that Indigo was too scared to even mutter an I told you so.”

“We were standing in the middle of the road and then we weren’t.”

“My prison cell was a perfect cube, all white, without a speck of dirt anywhere.”

“After that, I really lost track of time.”

“I was ready for them when they came for me the next day.”

Mombi let go of my hand as we materialized someplace dark.”

“A chill rushed through my body.”

“I opened my mouth to protest, but all that came out was laughter.”

“I was standing in the middle of an all-white cave.”

“After my training session with Nox, it was a relief to see Gert.”

“What is wrong with that woman?”

“The next day I woke to see that Glamora’s makeover had stuck.”

“When I got to Gert’s cave, she was standing in front of the scry-ing pool again.”

“My pulse was still speeding when I got to the training cave.”

“You were good back there,” Nox said.”

“A screeching sound woke me in the middle of the night.”

“I looked up to see Gert descending from the sky.”

“I woke up the next morning feeling spent and disoriented, my mind a jumble of hazy images that appeared one by one in my head like pages in a horrible picture book.”

“A moment later, I emerged out of a full-length mirror in a sloppy somersault.”

“Today is a beautiful day to be in Oz!”

“On the third day, there was a flutter of activity among the staff.”

The Wizard took a step toward me and tipped his hat, revealing a bald, shiny head with a horseshoe of curly gray hair.”

“I jumped back and gasped.”

“How about you carry a poison capsule in your little jaws and drop it into her mint julep?”

“The next morning, I held Star extra close before depositing her safely in one of my bureau drawers.”

“The first step of my plan was to get out of the rest of my chores.”

“I breathed a sigh of relief the next morning when the sun came up like normal.”

Maude and I materialized right above the sunflowers, just like I pictured, and tumbled in a heap through the petals and leaves, stems cracking beneath us.”

“The hunt was already on when I woke up.”

“Outside the window, the sky turned from blue to purple to black.”

“The hedge maze basically showed me the way out, opening up its walls for me.”

Nox?”

“Dorothy quickly named Sindra the new head maid.”

“Sindra was inappropriately excited considering just yesterday her predecessor’s arm had gotten hacked off.”

“Before I could connect, a black ball of snarling fur flew through the air, aiming straight for me.”

“It’s funny how much time you have to think when you’re plung-ing to your certain death from the top of a tower.”

“A few minutes later, Ollie, Maude, and I landed in a field just outside the city walls.”
