Review - How to Lose a Bachelor

How to Lose a Bachelor by Anna Banks

4 gnomes out of 5 gnomes

This book was a lot of fun. I don’t normally watch Bachelor type shows but the whole concept/structure in a book is a lot of fun. I really liked the humor in the story and how relatable all of the characters are.

Rochelle and Grant have some crazy chemistry and I love how far she took the whole revenge bits. I like that you slowly learn their history and get both sides of the story. Dual perspective shows you how crazy the whole situation is.

It has a great behind the scenes aspect to it all that makes for a quick and fun read. There’s plenty of manipulation on both sides and you’ll wonder what’s going to happen next. Plus though you pretty much know how it’s going to end, it’s a heck of an entertaining ride getting there.

Question of the Day - Do you play Pokémon GO?

I like a lot of other people of course remember Pokémon from the cartoon and the video games. I really never stopped playing the games so I was very happy the day Pokémon GO was released. It’s fun and I do find a lot more excuses to walk around a lot more then I used to. I'm Team Mystic/I live across the street from a Pokestop/there's a gym and three Pokestops at my work so it really has been a really fun week or so.

Here are some of my favorites I’ve found or evolved so far:

Reread-tastic - aka Books I love to read over and over and over again

I adore this series. I discovered it in high school and continue to read these three books and the other books in the series over and over. The world building and characters just draw me back time after time. I even find myself skipping the bad guy chapters and just reading my favorite parts too. This is the kind of series where I want to know everything about these characters and would read books about them and their world forever. It's the kind of series that really lets you imagine being as Ariel from the Little Mermaid would say, "part of that world."

Review - Song of the Deep

Song of the Deep by Brian Hastings

* Received from the publisher for review

4 gnomes out of  5 gnomes

Now this, this is a fun Middle Grade read. It kind of reads like a twist between a fairy tale and a fable.

Merryn is a great character and I love how strong she is, this girl knows how to get things done. Her father goes missing and she knows she has to save him. I like how her inventing skills save the day and how the whole submarine comes together.

She finds out that her father’s stories might be a lot more real than she imagined. There are a lot of fantastical aspects to it all but that’s where the fun and adventure really begins.

The illustrations really help the story shine, they kind of give the book an old-timey type of feeling. All these fantastical creatures and the environment make it so you never know what’s going to happen next.

This story is full of exciting characters and adventures and I know I can’t wait to play the video game that’s based on this book. The ending is strong and will make you want to explore more of this world.

“Technically true. But the thing about possibilities: There are some you want much more than others. Or only one you want much more than everything else.”

“The moral,” she says, “in case you haven’t come to it yourself, is that sometimes it’s enough just to put something out into the world.”

Review - You Know Me Well

You Know Me Well by Nina LaCour and David Levithan

* Read via NetGalley for review

4 gnomes out of 5 gnomes

This book was so good and it really makes you feel for the characters.

I like that the characters are open about their sexuality and how relatable their problems are. The first meeting of the two main characters is one of the funniest I’ve read in quite a while. That scene also made me think what an awesome potential movie this could be. It all just feels really thematic/is full of great visuals.

It’s awesome how Mark and Kate hit it off right away, it’s like they’ve each found their best friend soul mate.

Their relationships were well done/juicily complicated. The Mark/Ryan bits were cringey but also felt truthful and did make you feel bad for them. Kate’s potential relationship with Violet felt a bit stalker-y/weird at first but then it started to grow on me. I was never sure why Kate was friends with her best friend (they didn’t seem compatible at all.) How everything works out though is well worth reading.

The dialogue is strong and there are plenty of quotable quotes. The whole story takes place during Pride week and the whole atmosphere feels like another character in the story and really brings the book to life.
